Fresno

Coalinga

  • Coalinga Mineral Springs Scenic Trail. 2.5 mile trail. Highway 198, right on Coalinga Mineral Springs Road, and go to where the Coalinga Mineral Springs Recreation Area ends. 408-637-8183.

Fresno

  • El Capitan Dog Park. Friendly, safe and clean. Please keep it this way by observing dog park etiquette, picking up after your dog, controlling your dog, and respecting the park rules. This park was made possible by hard-working citizen users, who volunteer time and money to maintain the park and buy insurance. Location: From Highway 99 and Shaw Ave. in Fresno, drive east approximately 1.5 miles. At the intersection of El Capitan and Shaw, there is a stoplight and a Wendy's R Hamburger's on north side of street. Turn right on to El Capitan and go 2 block, where the street ends in a T-intersection at W. Los Alamos. The park is right there. The light Intersection Turn right. (Thank you Tony Cresap)
  • Fresno Leash Free Dog Park. Fenced ponding basin with shade & water. Located at At the corner of W. Alamos & El Capitan in Fresno, California. From 99 freeway take Shaw Ave East to El Capitan. Turn South. El Capitan ends at W. Alamos.  (Thank you Keith Goble)
  • Woodward Park. 1 acre fenced off-leash, over 240 acres of trails, river and paths. Fee is $3.00 to $4.00 dollars. Located off freeway 41 at N. Friant Rd. Take the 41 North towards Yosemite, take Friant off-ramp right, Park on Left hand side, corner of Shepherd and Friant. (Thank you Keith Goble, Cheryl Cervantes, and Susan Sims)

Mendota

  • Mendota Wildlife Area. Almost twelve thousand acres. Follow the signs on Highway 180. 209-655-4645

Mercey Hot Springs

  • Panoche Hills. Thirty thousand acres. Off County Road J1 and follow the signs. Call before you visit to find out if it is open. 408-637-8183.

Shaver Lake

  • Forest land is unleashed but leashes are required on County property. Follow Highway 168 North to the Lake.

Sierra National Forest

  • 1.3 million acres with more than 400 lakes and 1,100 miles of trials. Forest Headquarters: 1600 Tollhouse Rd., Clovis, CA 209-297-0706.

Kern

Bakersfield

  • Centennial Park. Centennial Park Lease Free Area. The leash free area is the fenced in area that also has soccer goals and a baseball backstop. Location: Montcliar (crosses Stockdale Highway) and Marella (crosses California Avenue). Directions: Take Highway 99, exit on Stockdale Highway, head west. Turn north on Montclair. Park on east side.   • Kroll Park. Park with dog off leash area. Location: Kroll Way and Montalvo Drive. Directions: From Gosford Road (Between Stockdale Hwy and Ming Ave) turn into Kroll Way and go East, park will be on right hand side. (Thank you David Anaya & Julie Bycott)
  • University Park. Park with off leash area for dogs. Location: University Avenue and Camden Street. (Thank you David Anaya)
  • Wilson Park. Park with leash free zone. Location: Wilson Road and Benton Street. (Thank you David Anaya)

Chimney Peak Recreation Area

  • Highway 178 to Canebrake Rd going North to the Tulare side.

Los Padres National Forest

  • 1.9 million acres. Forest Headquarters: 6144 Calle Real, Goleta, CA 93117, 805-683-6711.

Sequoia National Forest

  • 1.1 million acrest with 830 miles of trails. (Some parts of Kern River Canyon are off limits to dogs.) Forest Headquarters: 900 W Grand Ave., Porterville, CA 93257, 209-784-1500.

Tehachapi

  • Meadowbrook Dog Park. Fenced 1 acre off-leash park with a separate fenced area for small dogs only. Located in the NE corner of the park, north of the baseball fields. Location: Intersection of Red Apple Road and Westwood Blvd. Directions: From Highway 58, take the Highway 202 exit.  Turn right (west) on Red Apple Road (first light).  Meadowbrook park is approximately 1 mile, on the right side of the street, where Red Apple Road meets Westwood Blvd. (Thank you Susie Atherton)

Kings

Hanford

  • Freedom Park. Off Leash Dog Park. A children's park is nearby for those with kids. Freedom Park just opened May 12, 2007. Small dog and large dog areas are available. A small rock stream runs through the area for dogs that love water! Location: 10 1/2 Ave near Hamilton School. The cross streets are Grangeville & Leland. Directions: Cross streets are Grangeville and Leland on 10 1/2 Ave This is near Hamilton Elementary School. (Thank you Shoshi Pereira)

Madera

Madera

  • Hensley Lake. Highway 145, left on County Road 400 for 10 miles to the lake. 209-673-5151.

Sierra National Forest

Merced

Los Banos

  • Los Banos Wildlife Area. Leashfree during certain times of the year in this fifty-five hundred acres of grassy land. Hwy 152, North on Mercey Springs Rd (HWY 165) for 3 miles. 209-826-0463.

Santa Nella

  • O'Neill Forebay Wildlife Area. Interstate 5, South on HWY 33 to the entrance. 209-826-0463.

Monterey 

Carmel

  • Carmel City Beach. Highway 1, exit Ocean Avenue to the parking lot at the end. 408-624-4909.

Carmel Valley

  • Garland Ranch Regional Park. 4,500 acre park with 9 miles of trails. Highway 1 to Carmel Valley Road (East). Take Carmel Valley Road for about 10 miles east from Highway 1. The park is on the right. Follow any of the trails that go over the Carmel River. 408-659-4488.

Del Monte Beach

  • At the exit of Pacific Grove and Del Monte Avenue, off Highway 1 (South or North). Packed sand, gentle slope, somewhat protected. Good beach walking, but caution should be exercised during on shore and off shore storm periods. Most of the beaches north of the Del Monte Beach area are also off leash areas and fairly safe in general. High tides can be dangerous around here so folks need to be aware of this. We've lost some dogs at high tide.  (Cindy Adams)

Marina (old Fort Ord)

  • Marina Dog park. This is a resident only dog park. Must be a resident of Schnoover Park or Fredrick Park student housing.  Ex-ball field. Now all grass. Chain link fence enclosed. No water. Drinking fountain close by doesn't work. this is a dedicated dog run. Location: Schoonover Drive. Directions: Exit Hiway 1 at Reservation Rd. Take Reservation Rd. to Imjim Rd. Turn right onto Imjun then left on Abrams Dr., then left on Schoonover. Dog park is on the right side. (Thank you Mal Citron Crystal Fertig)

Monterey

  • Del Monte Beach. (NOT a leash free area) Posted leash law. Park rangers patrol beach, and will cite violators. Location: Del Monte Beach. Directions: Highway 1, to Del Monte. Right on Casa Verde To Tide St. (Thank you Darrell Bunse)

Salinas

  • BLM - Creekside Trail. BLM property on the backside of Fort Ord, Near Salinas. There are over 5,000 acres of filled with hiking, biking and equestrian trails. Your dog need not be leased, just under voice control. Location: South west of Salinas off of Highway 68 and Reservation Road. Directions: Take the Reservtion Road Exit the take left on Portola Drive and take next left and follow the road until it ends at the parking lot. (Thank you Judy Hough)
  • Fort Ord Public Lands. 83 miles of roads and trails for hiking, mountain biking and horses. Dogs allowed off leash. Parking, restrooms, trail maps and poop bags at Creekside Terrace entrance. Features coast live oak forests, maritime chaparral, pond and wetlands. Maintained by the Bureau of Land Management. Location: At the end of Creekside Terrace Road. Directions: From Salinas, go south on Main (Highway 68), exit right on Reservation Road, take the first left onto Portola Road and follow signs. (Thank you Gaylord Smith)

Pacific Grove

  • Asilomar State Beach. This is probably one of the safest as far as tides go. Located in Spanish Bay. Packed sand, gentle slope, open to the ocean. Good beach walking, but caution should be exercised during on shore and off shore storm periods. At Asilomar Blvd. and Sunset Avenue, go to the end of the beach. (Left of Asilomar State Beach.) Go down the path and turn left. When you see a golf course, you will be in the off-leash area.  There is also a nearby quarry that is a great place, but a little difficult to find. (Cindy Adams)
  • George Washington Park. Dogs may run leashless from sunrise to 9am and from  4pm to sunset. The leashless portion is within the area of Short, Melrose, Alder, and Pine Street. (408) 648-3100.
  • Rip Van Winkle Open Space Park. Great forest with trees. Dogs have been known to go leashless at any time. Follow the non-toll portion of Seventeen Mile Drive south and go left on Sunset Drive. Then right on Congress Avenue. Passed the Forest Grove Elementary School on the left. Then you will come to a dirt parking area on the right. 408-648-3100.

San Benito

Hollister

  • Sunnyslope Village Dog Park.  Small fenced dog park up in the sunnyslope area, limited amount of shade but a descent amount of semi-maintained green grass. Location: Alder Street at Polar Court. Directions: map the cross streets of alder st and poplar ct in hollister, park entrance at toward the end of poplar ct. (Thank you Gregg Waltz)

New Idria

  • Griswold Hills Recreation Area. Several thousand acres. Panoche Road, South on New Idria Road. Call first to find out if it is hunting season. 408-637-8183.

San Joaquin

Lodi

  • Beckman Park. Large grassy area for fun loving dogs to run! Location: 1426 W. Century Blvd. (Thank you T. Brennan)
  • Lawrence Park. Grassy area for fun, loving dogs to run and play! Location: 350 N. Washington St. (Thank you T. Brennan)
  • Vinewood Dog Park. Fenced Dog Park. Big Grassy area, with doggy bags and benches to sit on. Great place to take your fun loving dogs to play. Great people too! Area is fenced, water and dog clean up bags available. Closed by 10:00 PM. Area is fenced and has dog clean up bags available and water fountain. Location: 1824 W. Tokay St. or Virginia St, @Mills Ave. Directions: Take Hwy 12 into Lodi. (access from I-5 or Hwy 99) Once in Lodi, go north on Mills Avenue. Drive approx. 3 stop signs and the very next right is Virginia. Hours: Closed by 10:00 PM. Directly behind Vinewood Elementary School. (Thank you Lynn Ellen Glocker Condley, Lynn Glocker & T. Stockton

  • Barkleyville. There is a large dog area, under 20 lb area and an agility course area. Water fountains for large people, little people and doggie people. Poopie bags are also supplied and always full. Location: Feather River Drive between March Lane and Swain. Directions: To March Lane from I-5, go West, turn right onto Feather River Drive. Located about 1-2 miles and on left side of road. (Thank you Amy Polnoff)

Tracy

  • El Pescadero Park. 1 acre of enclosed grass area with benches, water fountain for dogs & humans, doggy bags, lights. Best time to go 4pm-6pm when most dogs come to play! Location: Tracy Blvd & Kavanaugh Ave. (dog park is on Kavanaugh) Directions: Right off Hwy 205. Exit Tracy Blvd (South). Left at Kavanaugh Ave (3rd stop light). San Luis Obispo

Atascadero

  • Heilmann Dog Park. 3/4 acre fenced off-leash dog park. Picnic tables, water, children's playground, and restrooms available nearby. Location: El Bordo Avenue next to Chalk Mt. Golf Course. Directions: 101 fwy to Santa Rosa exit. Go east on Santa Rose and turn right on El Camino Real. Turn left on El Bordo Avenue next to Bloom 'n Grow Florist. Dog park is at the end of El Bordo Avenue. Cambria

  • Cambria Dog Park. Off leash, water available, shade. Very nice and clean. Location: On south end of main street. Directions: take main street to south end. (Thank you Kathie Westgate)

San Luis Obispo

  • Laguna Lake Park. This park allows you to drive up and just open your door. The dog park is unfenced but well away from roads. Location: Madonna Road at Dalidio Place. Directions: Hwy 1 Madonna Rd exit; south on Madonna Rd to Dalidio Place; right into Park Entrance; follow main road to end, do not turn. (Thank you Lynn Casassa )
  • San Luis Obispo Dog Park. Location: Highway 1 @ El Chorro Regional Park. Directions: It's in the back of "El Chorro Regional Park", the park across the street from Cuesta College which is midway between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo on Highway 1 about 4 miles Northwest of SLO. Stanislaus

Modesto

  • Prescott Ave Dog Park. Grassy and fully fenced large lot. Location: On Church property on corner of Prescott and Rumble. Directions: Take Briggsmore Exite from Hwy 99 in Modesto and go East. Second light, Prescott turn left. about 1 mile on the right. (Thank you Cami Rodgers)

Patterson

  • Patterson Dog Park. Fenced area behind baseball diamonds. pooper scoops provided. Location: Ward ave. Directions: East off I-5 on Sperry, right on Ward. (Thank you Rick)

Turlock

  • Turlock Dog Park (Aka Sunnyview park) Beautiful dog park. It has a small dog area for those 30 lbs and under and a large dog area which small dogs may enter at the owners risk. Grass, trees, a few benches, water fountains for you and your 4 legged friend plus poop disposal areas.The dog park is open sunrise to sunset. Aggressive dogs, unaltered males and females in heat are not allowed. Dogs must be licensed and up to date on Rabies vaccine. Additional rules are posted. Location: 500 S. Berkeley Ave. Directions: Exit at Fulkerth Rd. Turn onto Fulkerth Rd and head into town.Turn right at N Golden State Blvd. Turn left at East Ave. Turn right at S Berkeley Ave. Destination will be on the right: 500 S Berkeley Ave, Turlock, CA 95380‎. Tulare

Inyo National Forest

  • 1.8 million acre forest with 1,200 miles of trials. Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest has twisted trees that are the oldest living things on earth. Forest Headquarters: 873 N. Main St., Bishop, CA 93514, 619-873-2400.

Mountain Home

  • Mountain Home State Forest. 4,800 acres with several trails. Highway 190, exit Balch Park Drive and go North to Bear Creek Road and go East for 15 miles. 209-539-2855.

Dog Fun Etiquette
  1. Make sure to bring something (like a pooper scooper or bags) to pick up the mess your dog(s) make. Always clean up after your dog.
  2. Bring some water for your dog and a leash (just in case)
  3. Don't bring your dog if it is aggressive
  4. Don't let your pet wander too far. Always keep an eye on them.
  5. If the park is near a residential area, minimize the barking.
